This class explores the life and legacy of Jack Swilling, Arizona pioneer and founder of Phoenix, paired with a chuck wagon meal for historical context. A prospector, mine/mill owner and saloon/dance hall owner, he was a colorful figure of the American West. Swilling embodied both pioneering spirit and lawlessness. Examine the Arizona Territory’s history, Swilling’s life and his genealogy. Wrongly imprisoned, he died before clearing his name; his wife later helped restore his legacy, honored by the DAR in 1931. Instructor Monica Hightower, western history enthusiast and Swilling’s third great-grandniece, presents this story. She owns the HX Chuck Wagon of Lubbock, Texas, a family heirloom wagon used for ranch cooking, competitions and catering.
